Microblading is one of the hottest new treatments in aesthetics and we’re so thrilled to have World Microblading® Certified Technician Brooke Johnson on our team to provide this service to our Azura Skin Care Center clients!
We sat down with Brooke and asked her all of our burning questions about microblading to get her expert take on the topic. Read on for Brooke’s take…
Q: Ok, Brooke – first things first… what the heck is microblading?
A: Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup in which pigment is deposited onto the skin with a hand tool or “micro-blade” to make tiny cuts on the skin that resemble hair strokes. The pigment does not go as deep as a traditional tattoo needle but only to the top layer of the Dermis – our second layer of skin.
Q: Sounds good! So tell us, who is good a candidate for this beauty treatment?
A: ANYONE! Honestly, everyone can benefit from microblading!
One of the great things is that it even allows clients who have undergone treatments such as chemo and radiation and have lost their brow hairs from therapy to have brows again.
Someone with Alopecia might also be a great candidate for microblading, as well as someone who just wants some more “fluff” or wants to achieve the shape of their dreams with an artistic arch.
Q: Sounding better and better! Now, how long does it last?
A: Microblading is a semi-permanent treatment which means it lasts anywhere from 12-to-36 months, depending on a few factors such as skin type, pore size, and proper aftercare.
After the initial treatment, a touch-up session is needed within four-to-eight weeks to solidify the hair strokes.
Q: Here’s the really important question we all want to know… does it hurt?
For the most part, no! What is pain anyway? 😉
I will apply a topical numbing cream for 20-30 minutes to help make the first pass more bearable. After the first pass, I use a topical anesthetic that is honestly magic!
The most discomfort is during the first pass or towards the end when the brow area gets tender and a bit sore. The best way to describe the feeling of microblading is to compare it to a scratch. I have not had anyone jump off of my table in pain and many say they could sleep through the process.
Q: We’re in! What should we expect after our first sessions?
A: Your brows will be a bit tender about 30 minutes, to an hour, after the treatment and they’ll have a slight red tint to them. This red tint will go away as they heal, considering this is basically the result of tiny scratches to the brow area.
Your eyebrows will be 20%-30% darker during the first one-to-four days after treatment and then will start to lighten in color. They will also shrink down 10%-20% in size as they heal.
Final Thoughts from Brooke
When picking your microblading artist, be sure you do your research because there are so many people out there performing microblading treatments that, unfortunately, do not have the proper training and certification. I went through a five-day intensive certification course and worked on live models. I was taught color theory, how to pick pigment based on skin tone, and was taught stroke removal, as well… most training courses don’t cover all of that!
The last thing you want is a set of brows you hate because you didn’t go to a certified brow specialist.
